สกุลออรีเซียส เป็นสกุลของปลาในวงศ์ปลาซิวข้าวสาร (Adrianichthyidae) ใช้ชื่อสกุลว่า Oryzias (/ออ-รี-เซียส/) โดยมาจากภาษากรีกคำว่า ὄρυζα ซึ่งแปลว่า "ข้าว" อ้างอิงมาจากสถานที่ค้นพบครั้งแรก คือ นาข้าว
มีลักษณะสำคัญ คือ ขากรรไกรไม่ยืดหด ฐานด้านบนของครีบอกอยู่ใกล้แนวสันหลังของลำตัว ครีบหลังอยู่ใกล้ครีบหาง ครีบก้นมีฐานยาว ครีบหางมีปลายกลมมน[2] เป็นปลาที่เก็บไข่ไว้ใต้ครีบอก[3]
มีความยาวประมาณ 6-7 เซนติเมตร ขนาดเต็มที่ไม่เกิน 9 เซนติเมตร โดยพบในแหล่งน้ำที่มีพรรณไม้น้ำมากมาย โดยมากพบในอุณหภูมิประมาณ 28 เซนติเมตร บ่อยครั้งที่พบในแหล่งน้ำที่มีค่าแร่ธาตุคาร์บอเนต และมีค่าความเป็นกรดด่าง (pH) ประมาณ 7.5 และอาจพบได้ในน้ำกร่อยได้ด้วย มีการกระจายพันธุ์ที่ค่อนข้างกว้างตั้งแต่ประเทศอินเดียจนถึงญี่ปุ่น, เกาะซูลาเวซี, คาบสมุทรอินโดจีนจนถึงออสเตรเลีย
ปัจจุบันพบแล้วประมาณ 32 ชนิด เป็นการพบได้ในประเทศไทย 6 ชนิด [3]
